SOME of the world’s elite cyclists are heading to Altrincham next month as the OVO Energy Tour of Britain wheels through the town.

The final stage of the UK’s biggest cycle race will get underway from the town centre on Saturday September 14.

And organisers have revealed that 20 teams have been confirmed for the event. They include Team INEOS, Team Jumbo – Visma and Team Sunweb.

Eleven teams fresh from competing in the Tour de France will take part in the race, including the French AG2R La Mondiale squad of Romain Bardet, who make their first appearance since 2009.

The tour will also welcome 10 UCI World Tour teams including Team Dimension Data, which includes record Tour de France sprinter Mark Cavendish.

And fans will also be able to cheer on the Great Britain cycling team, with the line-up set to feature the best British professionals from outside the competing teams, combined with the next generation of home stars.

Julie Harrington, chief executive of British Cycling, said: “There aren’t many road races outside a Grand Tour that attract such a staggering field of riders year after year, but the 2019 OVO Energy Tour of Britain is one of them.”
